Compare your options

At Beltline Health, our team specializes in a number of cutting-edge weight loss procedures, including gastric bypass, sleeve gastrectomy, and the duodenal switch. Whenever possible, we use minimally-invasive laparoscopic surgical techniques to help minimize postoperative pain, complications, and scarring so you can feel better, faster.

To help you understand the weight loss surgery options that we offer, we’ve prepared this brief overview of each procedure.

Sleeve Gastrectomy

Sleeve gastrectomy is a restrictive weight loss procedure that removes approximately 80 percent of your stomach to create a small, banana-shaped stomach sleeve that fills up quickly when you eat, helping you to feel satisfied on smaller portions.

Because there are no changes made to the actual path food takes through your digestive system during sleeve gastrectomy surgery, there is a reduced risk of nutritional deficiencies and gastric dumping when compared to other weight loss surgery options.

Gastric Bypass

Roux-en-Y gastric bypass is one of the most popular weight loss surgery options available today. During this operation, your bariatric surgeon uses laparoscopic tools to bypass a large portion of your stomach and duodenum, creating a small stomach pouch.

This new, smaller stomach pouch holds much less food than your natural stomach – as a result, you’ll feel full and satisfied on smaller portion sizes, leading to a significant reduction in the amount of calories you can take in.

Because a large section of your intestine is bypassed, you will also absorb fewer calories – this is why gastric bypass is known as a ‘restrictive-malabsorptive’ weight loss procedure.

Duodenal Switch

Duodenal switch surgery combines both a gastric bypass and a sleeve gastrectomy to remove approximately 80 percent of your stomach and bypass the upper portion of your small intestine.

This weight loss procedure is designed to restrict caloric intake by shrinking the capacity of the stomach, and alter the hormonal and metabolic functions in your digestive system.

Generally speaking, only patients who have a body mass index (BMI) of 50 or greater are considered to be good candidates for the duodenal switch, as this procedure involves the most dramatic surgical changes of all current weight loss surgery options.

Revisions

Bariatric surgery requires a lifelong commitment to new eating habits and healthy lifestyle choices. We see patients who stop their regular check-ins with their dietitian and surgical team and, without these accountability partners, start to slip into bad habits.

Robotic Surgery

Robotic weight loss surgery is a minimally-invasive surgery option for bariatric patients. This surgery method allows surgeons a greater range of motion and to perform surgeons through smaller incisions. Overall, this surgery method leads to quicker recovery time for patients and less cosmetic scarring.

4 Pillars of Weight Loss

1

Lifestyle Changes

Personalized evidence-based care plans drawing from the four pillars of weight loss so that patients find the long-term success that works for them. How many times has someone given you the weight loss advice “eat better and exercise more”? Sounds simple, but the reality is that many of us don’t know how to start making the right lifestyle changes, and our attempts leave us feeling tired and hungry!  Your Beltline Team will be there to support you through any lows and celebrate with you through the highs. Life changes happen, planned and unexpected. we will work with you to maintain your weight loss no matter what life sends your way.

2

Medication

Depending on why you gained weight or why you have been unsuccessful in losing weight on your own, medication may be the right choice for you. Generally, this will be teamed with at least one of the other four pillars, as there is no magic pill that will help you lose weight and keep it off without other changes to your eating and activity habits.

3

Meal Replacement

You can stop smoking, you can stop drinking, but you can’t stop eating! Sometimes your body needs a reset, and meal replacement can help. You get the nutrition you need and remove the temptation of unhealthy food choices. As well as helping you lose weight, this allows you to retrain your brain and gain a new, healthier relationship with food, which will lead you to long-term successful lifestyle changes.

4

Surgery

For many people, non-surgical options only get them so far, but that doesn’t mean everyone will see same success. If weight loss surgery is the right option for you we will help you prepare for a successful, fast healing surgery. After surgery, we will continue to support you with the lifestyle changes you must make for your surgery to help you achieve your weight loss and lifestyle goals.
